Reactivity doesn’t change on the walk alone

“He's fine at home, then loses it the second he sees a dog.”

Reactivity is practiced all day: at the window, at the front door, in the first minute outside. By the time you see the lunge, your dog has rehearsed it many times over.

“Some days are good, some are awful, and I can't tell why.”

Without a record, every walk feels like starting over. Writing it down shows you which rule slipped on the bad days.

“I know what to do. I just can't stick with it.”

Knowing the rules isn't the hard part. Holding them every day for a month is. One page a day means nothing gets skipped.

“I can't tell if any of this is working.”

Your day 0 trigger map and your day 30 map, side by side, show how much closer a trigger can be while your dog still listens.

How it works

Five minutes a day, for 30 days

  1. 01

Day 0: map your dog's triggers

Before your first walk, write down each trigger, how close it can be while your dog can still sit or look at you, and how close before they react.

  2. 02

    Every day: tick and log

Tick the house rules and walk rules that held, and log each trigger your dog noticed, how far away it was and how they responded.

  3. 03

    Every week: change one thing

Answer the weekly review questions and choose one thing to change for the next week. Only one.

  4. 04

    Day 30: map it again

Fill in the same trigger map and compare it with day 0. The difference between the two is your progress, in writing.

Your 30 days

One focus each week

Week 1

Fix it at home

The walk is not the main event yet. Hold all five house rules, wait for calm at the door before every walk, and walk only in your quietest neighborhood.

Week 2

Structure the walk

Add the four walk rules: heel held, no sniffing unless released, no marking and no fixating. Interrupt fixation while your dog can still think, before the bark.

Week 3

Work at the thinking distance

Practice where your dog is stressed but can still listen. Ask for a look, a sit or complete neutrality, and move up one level of pressure when it's reliable.

Week 4

Widen the world

Take it to busier streets. Pick something new from the exposure checklist for every walk, and keep every rule from the first three weeks exactly the same.

This is for you if…

  • Your dog barks, lunges or growls at dogs, people, bikes or other triggers on leash
  • Your dog barks at the window, the door or the fence at home
  • You know some of the rules but find it hard to hold them every day
  • You want to see, in writing, whether your dog is getting better

It’s not for you if…

  • Your dog has bitten someone, or you can't safely hold them on a walk. Talk to a trainer first; we offer a free phone assessment at 437-778-5273.
  • You want a quick fix. This is 30 days of daily work.

Who wrote it

Written by the trainers at K9 Academy

K9 Academy has trained dogs in Toronto since 2011, more than 10,000 of them in person. This planner takes the house rules, walk rules and fair corrections we use with our own reactive clients, from our guide Tackling Reactivity, and turns them into a routine you can follow at home, one page a day.

What owners say about our reactivity training

These reviews are about K9 Academy's reactivity training, which this planner is built on.

★★★★★

“We can't thank or recommend K9 Academy enough.”

“It's because of these folks that we have essentially been gifted a new dog. Our reactive, anxious rescue is now calm, confident, and a joy to walk. The transformation was beyond what we thought possible.”

Andrew M.Rescue Mix owner · Mississauga, ON

★★★★★

“I'd give 6 stars if I could!”

“We honestly can't believe Simba is the same dog. The reactivity is gone. He walks past other dogs like they don't exist. If you're on the fence — just do it. We wasted months trying other things first.”

Hugh M.Golden Retriever owner · Toronto, ON

★★★★★

“What a difference! I feel like a dream came true.”

“My dog's obedience is 100% better. The structured approach made all the difference — I finally understood WHY my dog was reactive and exactly what to do about it. Can't recommend enough.”

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is this a physical book?

No. It's a 56-page PDF you download straight after checkout. Print the whole planner, or print one week at a time and keep it on the fridge with a pen. It's sized for US Letter paper.

How much time does it take?

About five minutes a day to fill in that day's page, and a few minutes at the end of each week for the review. The training itself happens on your normal walks and at home.

Will it work for my dog's triggers?

You map your own dog's triggers on day 0, whatever they are: other dogs, people, bikes, skateboards, squirrels or the doorbell. Then you track those for 30 days.

Do I need any special equipment?

A leash, a pen, and treats or a toy your dog loves. The planner explains fair corrections; if you're not sure what's right for your dog, ask a trainer.

My dog has bitten someone. Is this for us?

Not on its own. If your dog has bitten someone or you can't safely hold them on a walk, contact a professional first. We offer a free phone assessment at 437-778-5273.

What if it doesn't help?
